Guidelines: On-Course Injury or Distress

The following guidelines are provided as an aide to ensuring that appropriate assistance is obtained for Members or others who suffer injury or experience distress while on the golf course:
1. At least one Member in each group should have a cell phone available while on the course.
2. In the event of an emergency, dial 9-1-1 and provide any information requested by the 9-1-1 attendant.
3. Then, call the pro shop to alert them to the situation. The phone number for the pro shop or the golf club will usually appear on the scorecard. Advise the pro shop of the following:
-
the nature of the emergency and the location of the affected Member on the golf course;
-
that 9-1-1 has been contacted and that emergency vehicles are on the way; and
-
that a staff member with a power cart should be dispatched to the front entrance of the golf course to meet the emergency vehicles and guide them to the site of the emergency.
4. Some golf courses will have medical supplies, including defibrillators, and staff members who are trained to use them and who may be able to assist. If the circumstances dictate, ask the pro shop whether this kind of assistance is available.
5. If the affected person is struggling to breathe and anyone trained in CPR is in the area of the emergency, have that individual begin to administer CPR.
6. If the affected person appears to have suffered a broken bone or other skeletal injury, ensure that he is not moved.
7. Keep the affected person warm and as comfortable as possible until help arrives.
