The Handicap Director’s Job
The Handicap Director's role is to help each Member maintain or improve his golf scoring performance in a manner that provides an appropriate level of competition together with a certain amount of entertainment.
The Handicap Director reviews the scorecards submitted following each SGA outing in order to establish the winners for that outing in the following categories:
-
Low Gross,
-
Low Net, and
-
Closest to the Pin on each of two (sometimes more) designated holes.
No individual may win either the Low Gross competition or the Low Net competition more than once in a season (except that a Member may win either of these competitions during the annual SGA Tournament while also winning either in a regular outing as well). No Member may win both the Low Gross and the Low Net competitions during the same outing or tournament.
The Handicap Director also reviews the scorecards in order to identify those Members and guests who have scored less than par on any hole during an outing, and how many times they have done so during that outing.
Following each outing, the Handicap Director enters each Member's score for that outing on the Northern Systems Inc. eHandicap Network. Members have access to the eHandicap Network through the SGA Website, under the tabs, For Members Only > Your Handicap Index & Course Handicap.
He also forwards the results of all Members’ prize winnings to the Website Director who posts all of this information on the website under the tabs, For Members Only > Top Golfers by Season.
Completion of Scorecards
The information that is required on a properly completed scorecard consists of the following:
-
the surname, together with the first name or initial, of each Member of the group,
-
a notation for each Member of the group who plays from the forward tees,
-
the Member’s score for each hole completed during the round, and
-
a notation of each sub-par hole scored by the Member of the group (usually by circling the score).
Submission of Scorecards
The scorekeeper for each group participating in an SGA outing is asked to submit the completed scorecard to the Handicap Director in one of the following ways:
-
by hand delivery at the end of the round,
-
by email of a scan of the scorecard,
-
by text of a photo of the scorecard, or
-
in any other form that provides all of the required information set out below under “Completion of Scorecards”.
The Handicap Director’s email address can be found on the website under the tabs, For Members Only > Contact an Officer or Director.
The completed scorecard must reach the Handicap Director by the end of the day following the day of the outing.
“Birdie Balls”
Each Member who shoots a sub-par score on any hole will be awarded one SGA golf ball for a “birdie”, two for an “Eagle” (except on a par 3 hole) and 3 for an “Albatross” or an “Ace” (or Hole in One).
"Low Gross" and "Low Net" Competitions
-
There will be one “Low Gross” and one “Low Net” competition, among SGA Members only, during each outing. No Member may win both competitions during the same outing, and no Member may win either competition more than once in a season (except that a second win may be awarded in the Annual Tournament).
-
During the Annual Tournament, there will be one “Low Gross” and one “Low Net” competition among “Super Senior” SGA Members (Members who have reached the age of 80 years as of the previous January 1), and one “Low Gross” and one “Low Net” competition among all other SGA Members. In addition, "runner up" prizes will be awarded in each of these categories.
-
Where two or more Members are tied in either the “Low Gross” competition or the "Low Net" competition, the winner will be decided in each case by comparing the gross scores of those Members for the last hole played. If two or more Members remain tied after this test, the winner will be decided in each case by comparing the gross scores of those Members for the second to the last hole played. And so on until the tie is broken.
-
For the “Low Gross” and “Low Net” competitions during regular outings, the prize for each winner will be 3 SGA golf balls.
For the “Low Gross” and “Low Net” competitions during the Annual Tournament, the prize for each winner will be a cash prize in an amount to be determined by the Executive.
"Closest-to-the-Pin" Competitions
-
Usually, there will be two “Closest-to-the-Pin” competitions during each regular outing, during each Scramble outing and during the Annual Tournament.
-
Also usually, one competition will take place on a designated Par 3 hole on the front nine, and the other on a designated Par 3 hole on the back nine.
-
Both competitions will be open to SGA Members only.
-
Members will play from the tee blocks from which they normally play on each of the two designated holes.
-
Each Member whose tee shot comes to rest on the putting green at a point closer to the edge of the cup than any other Member in his group, and closer to the spot on which the marker has been placed by a Member in an earlier group, must write his name on the marker card, below any name previously entered, and place the marker in the ground where his ball came to rest.
-
The last group to complete the round will retrieve the marker and deliver it to the Handicap Director.
-
The Member whose tee shot came to rest on the putting green at a point closer to the edge of the cup than that of any other Member, as evidenced by the last name on the marker, will win the competition.
-
The prize for each “Closest-to-the-Pin” winner will be 3 SGA golf balls.
